On 7 January 2013, the medals for PVT Newton W. Young arrived at our home. If you have been following the blog, then you will remember on 10 Aug 2012, PVT Newton W. Young, Keith's Grandfather and one of Christopher's name sakes was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received on 14 October 1918, during the Battle of the Argonne Forest, in the closing days of World War I. We have now received the medal sets and will work on having them framed with his picture in our family room.
Below are then pictures taken of the medals by a not so expert photographer.
Left to Right: World War I Victory Medal with 4 Clasp, the Purple Heart Medal and a Silver Service Pin (Bronze was for service, silver is for wounded veterans)
The clasp read: Defensive Sector, France, Meuse-Argonne and St. Mihiel.
The defensive sector clasp denotes having participate in unnamed battles, where the St Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne were large named campaigns and the France clasp denotes service in France.
His medal will go on display with others in our family that have served and will pasted down, so that future generations will know the sacrifices made by our family over the last 94 years and counting.
