14 Days old and counting

Today is Christopher's 14 day Birthday.... Not sure if that makes since. He joined us 14 days ago and is adjusting to his new surroundings. Of course, we do not understand the grunts, shreaks or other forms of communication he came programmed with. We are trying and in about 17 years and 50 weeks, we should have it down.
Another attempt to get a picture of him without his hands in his mouth or covering part of his face. You can see he is very excited to see the camera.
Here is a picture of Christopher and Daddy....

Here is his official 14 day old picture. It is his third outfit of the day. He is growing; he is at least 8lbs. That is our estimate. He has his two week doctor appointment on Monday, so we hope he has regained his losses. We will keep you posted on developments.

Christopher loves Visitors!

We have been trying to get him sleep longer through the night so our efforts were more focused on keeping him awake in the evening than blogging and catching up with everything else.  So, we have skipped a few days of our little guy's adventure.

The coolest part for him was he got more visitors and more presents.  He will have to grow into the cool clothes he got though.
I got to meet with Grandpa and Grandma Cantwell.
They knew mommy and daddy in Hawaii and he had the honor of taking their wedding photos and filming it.  One of these days, I will watch the wedding video.  Heard it was funny.

Grandma Cantwell was so very gentle with me and she even wanted to take me home.  One day, we will visit them at their home.
Three of our picture - again. I don't like the flashes anymore.  Why do they need my picture soooo often?!
I am hanging out with a doggy daddy got for mommy.  This one is big and soft.
Chilling in mom & dad's bed.  They let me hang out there during the day.

Got me a jogging stroller - while mommy & daddy put it together, I got to sit in the bouncer and watch them. Thanks to dad's cousin Aimee (would you be my aunt?) for the bouncer again.  It sure is comfy.

We had completed the paperwork at the hospital and received Christopher's birth certificate and social security card in the mail.  So, on Wednesday, we headed to Hill AFB to get him signed up to DEERS and Tricare.  Went well and now our little guy is all signed up - legally an Air Force dependent.

Auntie and Uncle came to visit!

It seems kids are really popular.... as soon as you have one the number of visitors you get goes way up. I just hope we have as many baby sitters as the years go on.

Christopher got a visit from his Aunt Monica (Mom's oldest sister) and Uncle Mark. They braved the wind and rain and traveled from West Jordan to Clearfield. Of course, like a good Aunt, she came bearing a nice blanket for Christopher.
Christopher waking up and realizing he has company.
The three of us.... in the living room. It is nice to have company so we can get a picture of the three of us!
Auntie Monica getting a good look at me.... she sure did smile at me.
Guess she was happy I was receiving guests.
See she is smiling again. Guess she really likes me.
Here is me with Uncle Mark and Aunt Monica.
Here is me getting my bottle in the living room. I was checking out my mommy and daddy's wedding pictures. I do not get to the living room very often. Only when company comes or on the way out the door.

Christopher is WEEK old today!

Christopher turned a Week old today - and in celebration we went on a drive to introduce him to some more friends. Of course, Christopher got to see Salt Lake City (not sure if he was fully awake) and had his longest car ride on I-15.  The bonus is, he doesn't get fussy in the car and seems to enjoy his car seat and the riding in the car in general.
Here is me sleeping in Grandma Jensen's arms - I do have quite a few grandparents in Utah!  She is Nicole's mom and had adopted my mom when she was on her mission - good thing - since she is sooo nice and she can teach a thing or two to mommy - on being a mom.  And of course, she is cool - she made me a nice blanket and then gave me a bright outfit just for showing up today!  Will wear it one of these days after I get a little bigger so I can fit in them better.
I got man-handled by 13 month old girl - she is practicing her anatomy lesson - pointing out everything on my face.  I do believe I have everything that is needed.
Here is Mallorie again - excited that she is not the smallest person in the house anymore.  And she got an alive doll to play with = ME - the plastic one was completely ignored. She was pretty gentle with me I have to say - except when she pulled my pants off - I think I will need a sturdy belt.
Aahhhh - happy to get back to mommy - everyone was staring at me - I was scared to open my eyes - they might like me too much and might want to keep me - never know!
Here is Nicole (mommy's friend from college days) - I think she wants another little one after holding me - shs didn't seem to want to give me back to daddy.

Well, today was a pretty good day - now that little Christopher is home ready for bed (hopefully ready to sleep through the night) - we will get ready for our next big adventure with our little guy.

Christopher hanging out with family and friends.....

I am here hanging out and just chilling. Being a baby is not so bad, I get plenty of sleep, eat and get played with.... of course that big guy, my dad, likes to wake me up alot....Keep saying let me see your eyes. Gosh, take a picture, it lasts longer. Still all in all my parent training is going good. No one has dropped me yet!

Here I am with my friend Ruby, she is a month and three days older than me. She is really nice. She is a little bigger than me, but I hope to catch up soon.....
Here is mommy and me in the family room.... I am just relaxing.
As you know I am into blogging and like checking to see who has visited and left comments, so leave comments.
Here I am with my chill pillow.... I think I was waiting on dinner. Service is not what it used to be, 4 days ago it was a lot better. Seems like I have spent half of my life waiting on dinner.
Hmmmm, how many of you think my dad bought me the Camo outfit. I know hard to believe he didn't. Still the title fits...."Major Cutie"! But, then it has Aussie Sergeant Stripes.... Well I am cute and you know it!
Here is another attempt at getting a pic with my eyes open. I fooled him again.....
Another picture of me sleeping.... thank goodness he does not post them all!

Well tomorrow at 21:42, Christopher will be 7 days old. He is doing really good and we are having a lot of fun with him. We had third bilirubin test today, which showed his levels are down and he is doing fine. So his color is coming in nice and he is looking even healthier and more like his mommy!

Christopher's big adventure!

As adults we often take the simple travels of day to day life for granted. For our little guy, who is all of 4 days old, the smallest journey is a great adventure. If you are from our part of Utah you can understand how someone can travel to 4 cities in a few minutes and not really go anywhere. Well today, Christopher completed his first 4 city tour. It was a wirl wind tour of Clearfield, Layton, Syracuse and Hill Air Force Base.

The first part of the adventure was his least favorite. His first well baby visit. He went to the Doctor!
Wow.... I did not think he was seriously going to put that there!
Here I am at Mommy's office. I was really impressed with the F-16, but I'm really looking forward to the arrival of the F-35.

Tummy time is recommanded, but I do wish dad would not set a number of push ups I have to do before I can get up!
 Just completed my sit ups!
If you notice the nice blue towel, Dad learned the hard way today what those are for.....
Here I am with Grandpa Cook, he is my Utah Grandpa. I went to visit him so he could see me. Glad I did, he didn't have me doing any push ups. Just held me. That is the difference between a dad in traning and a well seasoned Grandpa.
Here I am with Grandpa and Grandma Cook. Sorry about the yawn, but dad was taking forever to get the picture. Something about not changing the batteries, I am sure it was more operator than equipment!

Not pictured and I am glad for it, I have seen some crazy pictures on the net of people in walmart. I went to Walmart for the first time to pick up some things those two forgot. Like I said, parents in training. I also got to wait in the car with daddy while mommy went to her doctor, caught up on my sleep. So I have been all over. Well I am 4 days old so it was a great adventure for me!

Home or Bust!!!! Christopher made it home safely....

Christopher has made it home safe and sound and is adjusting to not being woken up by nurses and other kids. Now if we coud just adjust to not being woken up by Christopher!

Chimge and her sister Monica while still at the hospital! Christopher's first visitor!

Mommy and Christopher waiting on him to figure out nursing so we can check out and head home!
We had to make a few adjustments, but think we all have it down now!
Well he said the colors were nice, but he expected something a little less boyish with a better view. However, he did appreciate the effort and he would make do!
He like the swing, but wanted more classical..... than kiddy music!
Well look at that, it is just like the car seat, these two need some training! Gosh, what were they doing all these months?
Wow.... all this space is really mine! I could get used to this...... Much nicer and no plastic!
Wow this one is even bigger, when can I move in?
Why was he not like this at 3am? Any guesses?

Since many of you are wondering how the 1st night went! I will give you the highlights. We both got about 4 hours of sleep, off and on. We traded off with Christopher trying to keep him happy. He was awake most of the night, off and on. Over all it was not too bad. We have all heard the stories and this will not go into the book of worst nights! He did not cry alot on my shift and feed at least three times through the night. Seems like all of his bodily functions are functioning and he is a semi-happy baby. It was his first night after all. With a team approach and some effort, we will work through these early days and get him on some sort of schedule. Now of course this is my take, Chimge will add something later. Just wanted to get the pictures up, so you can see him. We got the hospital pictures done, so we will try to get out birth announcements and pictures as we can. If you look here every few days, you will be able to track progress and see the new guy! Again thanks for all your prayers and best wishes.....

What is in a Name?

Often very little goes into a name, but such is not the case with Christopher Arnold Newton Young. If he had been a girl, he would have been name Kathleen Doris Young for my mother's mother and for my mother. Both have passed on and I would have liked for a girl to carry their names forward. However, since he is a boy, a boy or man's name was required.
Chimge and I discussed names and we agreed to give him a name with meaning and one that people could say. He is after all half American and half Mongolian. Of course, with both of his parents as officers in the United States Military, a good well rounded American name was in order.  Chimge gave me a lot of latitude in choosing his names. I wanted his name to reflect the values we hold and that our family has expressed through the years. Thus, I put a lot of thought into it.
I wanted him to carry forward into his life the names of men, names you would not have heard of, but who in some way had an impact on my life. Two of them, I would not be here without, they are my Grandfathers: Arnold Collins Jr and Newton Willard Young. The other has been a life long friend, who shares my values of duty, honor, country and family. One thing we all share is none of us was perfect, but that we all shared in our countries' burdens to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America in times of trouble at great risk to our lives. Thus our son will carry the name Christopher Arnold Newton Young and he will know that his name has meaning and that the men he is named after all share a bond that was forged in honored service to his nation. Regardless of what he chooses to do in his life, he will know that his family has answered the time honored tradition of service to their beloved nation.

Specialist Keith Young and Specialist Christopher Whitaker, April 10, 1991 in Germany on the way home from "The Storm", the First Gulf War, the Liberation of Kuwait. Christopher Whitaker served 10 years of Active Military Service, including multiple tours of duty in Korea, as well as with the 101st Airborne Div, 82nd Airborne Division and the 3rd Infantry Regiment "The Old Guard."
Then Cpt Arnold Collins Jr., in the mid 1950s. Photo was is in his Dress Uniform, showing a Combat Infantryman's Badge and Campaign Medals from World War II and Korea. He would go on to serve a total of 27 years and serve two more tours in Vietnam. He had a combined total of approximately 5 years of Combat service in three major wars. He retired in 1968 as a Lt Colonel.
Newton Willard Young shown here as a private (Doughboy) in his dress uniform circa 1917/18 in the First World War. On his cap is the insignia of the 167th Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Infantry Division. He was wounded in combat in France in 1918. Like many men of his generation he volunteered or was drafted and served in the Great War.
I am Keith Colin Young, Christopher's Father, I joined the Army in June of 1988. I have served in three major operations. Desert Storm 1991, Operation Iraqi Freedom (March 2004-05), (Aug05-July06) and Operation Enduring Freedom (December 07-Sept 08). I have served on both Active Duty and in the United States Army Reserves where I continue to serve as a Civil Affairs Officer. Obviously, Christopher picked up the family name from me and his mother.
2nd Lt Young      Mom and Dad
Of course Christopher's story would not be complete without a mention of his incredible mother, 2nd Lt Oyunchimeg Young. The other half of a family name, his mother, without whom he would not be here. She is an immigrant to the United States of America from Mongolia. She became a citizen of this great country and in gratitude wanted to give back to her adopted country and its people. She is currently serving on active duty in the United States Air Force as an Officer.

So, what is in a name? Now you know what has gone into our son's name.

I pray that our Heavenly Father will bless him and protect him as he grows, where ever he goes and in what ever he chooses to do.

Christopher, your mother and father, your family and friends welcome you to this family and are so very happy you are here and healthy.

Welcome Christopher Arnold Newton Young!

Well, we had planned an easy and fun day with friends.  We got to Chanar's house for some Thai dinner around 5:00 p.m.  Keith was sitting and eating already and I made my usual potty trip - and realized my water broke.  Oops.  Took us 15 minutes to make it to the hospital and by then, I had full on contractions.
Keith and I.  Family of two is about to be over along with my protruding belly.  Me all settled in and plugged up to machines.  Just waiting for my epidoral - as I reasoned - it was created for a good reason and as long as it works for me I am partaking of it.
Christopher Arnold Newton Young was born at 21:42 hours after 2 hours of pushing and with a little help of forceps. He was 7 lbs and 5 ounces (3.329 kg) and 20 inches (50 cm) long. The name has a deep meaning and he has a lot to live up to.  Oh well, daddy wanted to give him a name and he did - one long one.
And no - he has no Mongolian name - since he is an American and will be raised here, we figured Mongolian name was not necessary - and of course, it would be a hassle for him, his paternal side of the family and eventually his teachers to pronounce and spell the Mongolian name. So, I figure his Mongolian grandparents can give him a Mongolian "nickname" if they so desire.
Chris with daddy.  Daddy took him to nursery and gave him his first bath while mommy was being stiched up (not a Cesarean - but an episiodomy) and getting all ready for the move from Labor & Delivery to Post-natal Recovery room.
Here are ten toes and ten fingers all warming up.
After all cleaned up and slept some - he is a happy little boy.
